Twenty

The following day Kate decided to catch up with housework, washing and all the other tedious jobs that she didn’t have the energy to cope with during her working week. She’d only got the kitchen cleaned and the floor washed when she heard tapping at the door. Oh no, she thought, as she replaced her squeezy mop in the cupboard, not Melissa again! Surely not! Or the press, who were hovering around everywhere and had already pestered her a couple of times when she was in the back garden. She was very surprised when she opened the door to find Fergal standing there. Alone.

‘I just wanted to have a word, Kate,’ he said by way of greeting.

‘You’d better come in then,’ Kate said, standing aside to let him pass and wondering if Angie had chucked him out again. ‘Go into the sitting room because the kitchen floor’s all wet.’

‘I won’t stay long,’ he said, plonking himself down on the sofa, ‘but I could murder a cup of tea.’

Kate padded across the kitchen floor to boil the kettle and make two mugs of tea. This was getting to be a habit, she thought. When she went back, with a mug in each hand, she found Fergal stroking Barney.

‘Are you in the doghouse again then?’ Kate asked, sitting down opposite.

‘No, no, I’m not,’ Fergal said hurriedly. ‘On the contrary, we’re getting on just fine. It’s only that I’m on my way to the supermarket and I wanted to ask your advice, Kate.’

‘My advice?’ Kate looked astonished. ‘Advice on what, for goodness’ sake?’

‘Well, first of all, I wanted to apologise for being such an eejit with that bloody woman,’ he said. ‘So I thought that I might buy Angie a wee something-or-other. Now, I haven’t a clue as to what sort of things you girls like to receive, so I thought maybe you could give me a few pointers?’ Fergal took a big gulp of tea. ‘And I don’t want you and Woody to think bad of me or think that I’m some sort of philanderer.’

‘Well,’ Kate said, ‘I must admit I didn’t think too well of you when Angie told me what you’d been up to.’

‘Now that’s quite understandable, so I feel I need to explain,’ Fergal said.

‘You don’t need to explain anything to me, as long as Angie’s happy.’

Fergal gave a big sigh. ‘I want you to know that that woman had been coming on to me for days, pestering me, you know? She had some sort of fixation for me. All the while Angie is lecturing me about flirting with her, which I wasn’t, not much anyway – but you can’t be rude to customers, can you? So she gets on her high horse and swans out, up here I think it was she came?’

Kate nodded.

‘I admit I had a few drinks too many. And when I went to lock up, there’s this bloody woman waiting outside! She wasn’t one for giving up, I can tell you! She’s wanting me
