The following day Kate decided to catch up with housework, washing and all the other tedious jobs that she didnât have the energy to cope with during her working week. Sheâd only got the kitchen cleaned and the floor washed when she heard tapping at the door. Oh no, she thought, as she replaced her squeezy mop in the cupboard, not Melissa again! Surely not! Or the press, who were hovering around everywhere and had already pestered her a couple of times when she was in the back garden. She was very surprised when she opened the door to find Fergal standing there. Alone.
âI just wanted to have a word, Kate,â he said by way of greeting.
âYouâd better come in then,â Kate said, standing aside to let him pass and wondering if Angie had chucked him out again. âGo into the sitting room because the kitchen floorâs all wet.â
âI wonât stay long,â he said, plonking himself down on the sofa, âbut I could murder a cup of tea.â
Kate padded across the kitchen floor to boil the kettle and make two mugs of tea. This was getting to be a habit, she thought. When she went back, with a mug in each hand, she found Fergal stroking Barney.
âAre you in the doghouse again then?â Kate asked, sitting down opposite.
âNo, no, Iâm not,â Fergal said hurriedly. âOn the contrary, weâre getting on just fine. Itâs only that Iâm on my way to the supermarket and I wanted to ask your advice, Kate.â
âMy advice?â Kate looked astonished. âAdvice on what, for goodnessâ sake?â
âWell, first of all, I wanted to apologise for being such an eejit with that bloody woman,â he said. âSo I thought that I might buy Angie a wee something-or-other. Now, I havenât a clue as to what sort of things you girls like to receive, so I thought maybe you could give me a few pointers?â Fergal took a big gulp of tea. âAnd I donât want you and Woody to think bad of me or think that Iâm some sort of philanderer.â
âWell,â Kate said, âI must admit I didnât think too well of you when Angie told me what youâd been up to.â
âNow thatâs quite understandable, so I feel I need to explain,â Fergal said.
âYou donât need to explain anything to me, as long as Angieâs happy.â
Fergal gave a big sigh. âI want you to know that that woman had been coming on to me for days, pestering me, you know? She had some sort of fixation for me. All the while Angie is lecturing me about flirting with her, which I wasnât, not much anyway â but you canât be rude to customers, can you? So she gets on her high horse and swans out, up here I think it was she came?â
Kate nodded.
âI admit I had a few drinks too many. And when I went to lock up, thereâs this bloody woman waiting outside! She wasnât one for giving up, I can tell you! Sheâs wanting me
